A house for a family on a hill top in Melbourne’s Inner North. The approach was to visually connect the interiors with the horizon, using the visual distance between near and distant to create an interplay between the inside and outside. The qualities of a horizon are explored through the window detailing; the frame is isolated to top and bottom to create an effect of compression, while the frame is concealed on the sides, to create an effect that the view goes forever. Timber battens above the deck project beyond the roof beam to draw the eye toward the distance. These subtle decisions extend the relationship between inside and outside.
